Begin by going to www.akc.org and reading the breed standards to select a dog that fits your lifestyle. 

Search For AKC breeder of Merit in the breed you are looking for

Search AKC marketplace for breeders

Then go to http://www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm and select “National Club Breeder Referral” or “Search for a Local Club.” Click on a breed, and you will be taken to the parent club or member clubs. Contact the club reps in your area and ask to be put in touch with the breeders expecting litters.

• Will ask questions about your expectations, home environment,children,other pets,etc.

• Will conduct a home check if at all possible, or ask for several references

• Will provide proof that sire & dam are at least 2 years old and have their breed-specific health clearances

• Will provide a 3-5 generation pedigree

• Will tell you about any possible health issues in that pedigree

• Will provide puppy wellness details from a veterinarian

• Will probably providea copy of the litter evaluation done by another knowledgeable breeder

• Will provide AKC registration papers

• Will talk to you about feeding, training and care of your puppy

• Will have a contract for you to sign that includes responsibilities on both sides

• Will take back the dog at any time if you no longer can care for it

• Will be a member of the breed parent club and probably a local club

• Willbeanactiveparticipantinatleastonedogsportoractivity

• Will always be available to advise and consult on diet, vaccinations, injuries, health issues,etc.

At Legend Golden Retrievers most of the time we usually keep several puppies back. We keep them for a couple reasons: as replacement sires or dams, show prospects, or to start training for our jumpstart program if there are puppies available. While we would love to know the exact number of puppies that will be available, we have to rely on nature just like every other breeder. We will make every effort to provide you with a beautiful puppy as soon as possible. However, girls only come into season 2 times each year so we must rely on breeding cycles. Waiting for the right puppy is well worth the wait for many years of joy and happiness.
